Upper New River rafting is mild white water. This is a great place for a family raft trip, or for scouts and youth groups to get their feet wet in the majestic and breathtakingly scenic New River Gorge.
Running the Upper New River is the perfect choice for an easy introduction to whitewater rafting. Folks ages six to 86 will enjoy the gentle rapids and the fun and excitement of playing in the river.
We use larger rafts on higher-water days and inflatable kayaks on normal days. Larger rafts are also available on normal days for those who don't want to get too wet above the ankles.
About the New River
The New River is the classic upon which the West Virginia whitewater rafting industry was built. It's a drop-pool river, which means placid pool punctuated by moments of excitement. The New has several "sections" that we run. Some are excellent beginner and family-friendly trips, while others better for those who want more excitement and a bigger challenge.
About the Upper New River
The New River is a large volume river, which makes for huge rapids—in the Lower Gorge. But up here, the valley is wide and the water is shallower as it flows through long calm pools and over gradients through ripply shoals, which create long stretches of fun waves and moving water, without all the challenge of the Lower New. There's plenty of floating and swimming to do in between the rapids.

Our Upper New guides are absolute experts at working with beginner rafters and families with small children. Guides will be either in rafts or in duckies leading (and following up on!) the pack.
We typically take Duckies on the Upper New. They are inflatable, one or two-person rafts shaped like kayaks. With a duckie, you'll get to experience a more personal whitewater rafting challenge and have the experience of a lifetime. Our duckies are self-bailing, which means water that splashes in will drain out on its own. They are stable, easy to maneuver and fun. Standard 15-foot rafts are available as well upon request. They hold 8-9 guests plus a guide.
Time on Water
This is a full day trip. Depending on the water level, you'll spend between 4-6 hours on the water plus shuttle time to and from the river.
We provide transportation from our resort to the river and back again, all rafting equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle and boat) and the best riverside lunch in the world of rafting. Be assured you will not go hungry!
What to Bring
Bring any medication you need throughout the day, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and a change of clothes to keep at the resort upon your return. Guides carry small waterproof bags to stow necessary medications. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you may also want a synthetic layer. If necessary, wetsuits and splash jackets are available for rent. Call us to book those, too.
Are you bringing a large crew (15+) from your youth group, business or similar organization? Request customized information here.

The Upper New minimum age is 6 years old. Our PFDs (personal floatation devices) have a maximum chest capacity of 58 inches.
