Day one: The Upper New River is the quintessential family-fun river section. Characterized by placid pools and long shoals rapids up to mild class III, you can run it in a one or two-person inflatable kayak (AKA a “ducky”) or if you’re a little more tentative hop into a full sized raft with your guide. We’ll stop for a gigantic riverside deli lunch, too, and if time permits, a waterfall hike!
Summersville Lake is a truly incredible resource. Dammed in 1966 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the water level of the Gauley River rose and rose and rose until it met the cliffs at the rim of the gorge. The result is a massive, crystal-clear freshwater reservoir edged by towering sandstone cliffs, which we’ll explore on morning two by pontoon boat, stopping along the way to rock climb, swim, and stand-up paddleboard.
