Experience the New River Gorge from two different craft—ride the rapids in a raft, then explore the flats on a stand-up paddleboard.
Day One: The Lower New River Gorge whitewater rafting trip is the class-IV classic that virtually built the entire West Virginia rafting industry. This drop-pool river section has eight miles of big waves and steep ledges punctuated by placid pools in which to swim, float and relax. The character of the Lower New changes dramatically with various water levels. At high water (typically spring through June) the waves are gigantic roller-coaster-y stacks of water. At lower levels, the waves get smaller, but steeper, and when it gets low enough, it’s time to go raft surfing, which is a little like riding an angry drunken hippo. We’ll eat a huge deli-style lunch riverside, too!
Day two: are you ready to get back on the water? We’re headed for Hawks Nest Lake, the flat-water section of the New River created by Hawk’s Nest Dam. This stunning piece of the Gorge is rimmed by rocky faces and sports all sorts of open space you can learn to balance on your board without having to worry about those pesky rapids and rocks.
