The Lower New River is the trip that built the West Virginia whitewater industry. It's got a great mix of big waves, fun water and calm pools for resting and swimming.
Over the years, our guests say over and over, "Can we run the New River again?" Now you can. Designed to maximize the intensity of a New River rafting trip, the "Double New" runs the toughest section of the New River twice in the same day.
This trip combines two New River Rapid runs, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with lunch between your paddling adventures.
You'll begin at Cunard, WV and run eight miles through 27 rapids up to Class V waters. This means the Double New runs more rapids in a day than any other New River rafting trip.
So what are you waiting for? Make it a double.
About the New River
The New River is the classic upon which the West Virginia whitewater rafting industry was built. It's a drop-pool river, which means placid pool punctuated by moments of excitement. The New has several "sections" that we run. Some are excellent beginner and family-friendly trips, while others better for those who want more excitement and a bigger challenge.
About the Lower New River
The Lower New River is West Virginia whitewater rafting at its best. A large volume river, the Lower New's rapids are formed by large shelf drops and boulders. These structures create monster waves, hydraulics and world class whitewater.
New River Rapids Classification
Class I through IV
Lower New River Rapids Classification
Class I through IV
On class III-IV and harder trips, a guide sits in every raft and provides instruction at each major rapid and throughout the trip. On some trips like the Upper New and Summer Gauley, guests may be in their own inflatable kayaks (duckies). If that is the case, guides will be present to instruct, advise and assist.
Our standard rafts are 16 feet long, comfortably seating 8-9 guests and a guide.
Time on Water
The full day trip consists of back to back New River Rapid Runs with 2-3 hours on the water per run and a 30 minute shuttle each way.
Transportation to and from the river, all rafting equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle & boat) and a complimentary beverage after the trip. We serve lunch back at basecamp between each run. You will most likely choose to eat at Buffler's.
What to Bring
Bring any medication you need throughout the day, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and a change of clothes to keep at the resort upon your return. Guides carry small waterproof bags to stow necessary medications. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you may also want a synthetic layer. If necessary, wetsuits and splash jackets are available for rent. Call us to book those, too.
Requirements & Restrictions
The Double Rapid Run minimum age is 12 years old. Our PFDs (personal floatation devices) have a maximum chest capacity of 58 inches.
Your guides and leaders will discuss specific safety requirements on site.
